Why Developing Weak Ties in University is Important

The conventional approach to developing relationships in University is to create strong ties with a few people. I do the opposite. I value weak ties instead.

Weak Tie: A person you know slightly, but not a close friend.

During University, I want to meet interesting people and develop weak ties with them. Particularly to figure out who I want to work with in the future. By developing weak ties, the barrier to entry is low if I want to join a project or recruit.

Don't get me wrong, I still have strong ties. However, I notice a lot of my peers stick only to their strong ties. University is one of the best platforms to develop weak ties. Everyone—for the most part—is open to meeting new people. Take advantage of that and meet as many compelling individuals as you can.

Find people you deem interesting and develop a weak tie with them. These individuals will benefit you in many ways as they are a source of mentorship, advice, and mutual interest.
